Top Tips for your Houston Senior Portrait Session
Searching for “senior photographers near me” on the internet? Look no further!
Your senior’s portraits are such an important part of this milestone in their life. High school senior portraits are such a great way to commemorate the accomplishment of graduation.
You’ll want those photos to be professional and memorable, giving you a chance to look back and reflect with pride.
Allison Wilkins at Evin Thayer Studios makes the whole experience easier than ever by helping you choose looks, locations, and can even arrange to have a makeup artist work with you on the day of your shoot. Pretty cool, right?
For some graduates, a professional photoshoot can seem intimidating, but we are here to help!
We’ve created a list of tips from a professional senior photographer to help you get started as you plan your senior’s portrait session.
- What to Wear for a Senior Portrait Session
We want your senior’s personality and style to shine during their session! Most of our seniors bring 3-5 outfit changes for a variety of looks. This usually includes a combination of formal to casual.
Is your senior a member of a sports team or dance team? We love when our seniors bring in their uniforms to showcase their talents!
Here is an example of a typical senior wardrobe selection:
- Cap and Gown
- Letter Jacket with top and jeans or skirt
- Formal (tux or gown)
- Fun/Dressy (slacks or casual dress)
- Fun/Casual (jeans and top)
Also keep in mind the surroundings of the photoshoot. Will it be in studio or on location? Or both! Think about outfits that would go well with the setting. We can discuss this all in our consultation prior to the senior portrait session.
The most important thing is making sure that your senior feels confident and comfortable in whatever they are wearing!
- Makeup Tips for a Senior Portrait Session
Getting makeup professionally done can make a difference in your senior’s pictures.
On camera makeup is much different than everyday makeup.
It often requires different types of contouring, layers, highlights, and even certain makeup brands that hold up better in front of lights or with natural outdoor light.
If your senior is not used to doing makeup their own makeup, we’re happy to connect you with some local makeup artists to ensure their makeup is spot on and camera ready!
If your senior does decide to do their own makeup, here is a list of do’s and don’ts that we’ve compiled over years of professional photography experience:
❌ Don’t go for a look that is “trendy.” Try going for a timeless look. This will prevent the photos from looking dated in years to come.
✅ Do choose a feature you want to highlight. If it’s the lips, adding a bright shade of lipstick will look flattering. If you want to accentuate the eyes, choose a dark and volumizing mascara or an eyeshadow that pops.
✅ Do use a setting spray to help your makeup stay in place for the duration of the shoot, especially if you are planning to use outdoor locations for your senior’s portraits. Sometimes makeup can melt off, especially in Texas weather!
✅ Do use a translucent face powder for a more balanced complexion. Translucent powder can help with oil, shininess, and creasing of the foundation or concealer. Powder and setting spray are the key to long-lasting makeup!
